Novella Thompson is the administrator of the Population Health Department. In this role, she provides operational and strategic leadership for programs that manage patient care beyond hospital walls. She oversees a portfolio of programs and services designed to address post-acute and transitions of care needs and healthcare disparities to create a more effective continuum of care that meets patients where they are and implements effective health innovations to increase accessibility and convenience.

With UVA Health since 2010, Novella has served in various leadership roles including director of population health, manager of patient advocacy and author of UVA Health’s Advocacy Model, administrative consultant for WellVirginia ACO, and was one of the original creators of Hoos Well innovative exercise, biometric screenings, and health/wellness coaching.

Novella has traveled the world and developed a deep appreciation for and love of learning about other cultures. She is a passionate advocate for behavioral health and ensuring patient needs are addressed through the development and promotion of programs aimed to decrease and/or remove health inequities among the patient populations served at UVA Health. 

Novella completed her undergraduate degree in three years at West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from Marshall University where she earned her master’s degree in counseling psychology. She is a designated Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives, certified in advanced lean management, and will complete an Executive MBA in June 2024.
